Update: Leadville building explosion

The Aspen Gold fire incident that happened on Jan. 22 on Highway 24 in Leadville was confirmed as the natural gas that escaped from a damaged fuel tank which exploded and quickly found an ignition source. The fire started in the Gas Consultants business space and was an accident; there is no evidence of criminal activity.

According to a press release, the fire was difficult to fight due to the compartmentalized nature of the building and multiple roofs.

There were four injuries – one was a burn to an employee from Gas Consultants who fled the building after the explosion, and three were from smoke inhalation. All four were taken to St. Vincent General Hospital in Leadville. The burn victim was taken by Summit Ambulance to University Hospital in Denver and released on Saturday. His injuries were not life threatening. The other three were checked out at St. Vincent General Hospital and released on Friday.

The main building was destroyed or damaged due to the fire. Only the Millenium Towing space was spared fire damage and AG Masonry will be able to salvage some equipment inside his space. Due to the types of material stored in these businesses (such as gas, oil, paint, lacquer) and vehicles parked close to the building, there were a number of other explosions with debris scattered several blocks away. Fire crews were able to slow the pace of the fire and limited the spread of the fire at the south end of the building.
