Vail Resorts Echo partners with FIRC for child care

The Family and Intercultural Resource Center was awarded a Vail Resorts Echo grant to assist local families with child care scholarships. It also provides support for the FIRC Families United home visitation program.

In Summit County, 82 percent of families have both parents working. This is one of the highest percentages in the country. Finding and paying for child care can be a challenge, especially now as employers have been forced to cut positions, hours and enforce wage freezes.

“Studies have found when parents cannot provide licensed child care they are not as effective in the workplace. Another result is an influx of people permanently relocating out of Summit County due to the high costs associated with child care,” said Brianne Snow, the FIRC grants and data manager. “At FIRC, our wish is to provide families with options to stay in our community and become better parents and employees.”

The child care money will be given to selected FIRC families enrolled in the Families United program in the form of a child-care scholarship.

“It is wonderful to have an employer like Vail Resorts in our community,” said executive director Tamara Drangstveit. “They clearly understand that stable families lead to better employees.”

In addition to cash support, VR Echo and Vail Resorts employees are teaming up with FIRC to assist in the areas of food bank, volunteer and in-kind support.

Currently Keystone is raising food for the FIRC Food Bank and offering guests premier parking for food donations. The food drive will move to Breckenridge Ski Resort in January.
