Veterans need our support

Re: Home from war but still fighting (SDN, July 20)

Thanks for writing such a compelling article, but I do not know if you realize what you have stumbled onto.

I live in Breckenridge, but volunteer full time for an organization based in Phoenix that helps active military and veteran families with financial support and other critical resources in their time of need.

Our main focus is preventing their homes from being foreclosed as well as emergency financial support like food, clothing, transportation, paying utilities so they will not be shut off and on and on.

We are helping families where the husband has been deployed three times to Iraq, his wife diagnosed with breast cancer, couldn‚t work and their home was being foreclosed, down to families who live in extreme heat but cannot pay utilities, wives driving on bald tires, lack of food, and on and on ” and these are just the families of active serving military members.

Think about how much stress comes with a foreclosure or hearing of your families very basic financial issues, while you are just trying to survive day to day-its overwhelming.

And this is just with active military families.

We work with state departments of veteran affairs, and what we hear is that a surge is coming ” predicting more than 300,000 of those that served in the middle east will return with some type of brain issue ” whether its physical of psychological. Realistically, how will they ever provide a sustainable and high quality living for their families?

I can only say based on working with Vietnam and the first Gulf war Vets, its very very tough.

Until I got involved, I never had any idea how poorly we treat our military families.

I was happy to live in my nice town, nice house with nice neighbors and just enjoying life, but there is a crisis going on, and it’s only getting larger.

Again, I cannot thank you enough for writing this article. It’s a start.
