DILLON ” Bagpipes played in the background at a rainy Dillon Cemetery Monday morning, as community members celebrated Memorial Day.

About 100 people gathered to honor U.S. veterans and citizens who have lost their lives serving their country. As the ceremony began, the clouds converged to cover the patches of blue sky remaining and the smell of sage wafted into the cemetery.

“Living or dead, soldiers are never forgotten,” said Kevin Mastin, exalted ruler of the Summit County Elks Lodge.

Mastin presented a $500 check on behalf of the Summit County Elks to the town of Dillon to start a fund to identify the unmarked and unknown graves in the Dillon Cemetery.

Rep. Gary Lindstrom, D-Breckenridge, told the crowd about Rep. Mark Larson, R-Cortez, who, each day during the legislative session, announced the name of a Colorado soldier who had died in Iraq.

“And then he would cry like a baby. Praise God,” Lindstrom said. “We should all react that way.”

The sky opened up and rained down upon the ceremony as Dennis Flint, CEO of High Country Health Care, recounted stories about five of his fallen friends. One of which was Silverthorne Police Chief Kent Donahue who died Sunday night.

The Summit County concert band paid tribute to each of the military branches with a medley of patriotic tunes.
