Vincent Vukonich: Health care a disgrace

Why do I support health care reform? As a fiscal conservative and a social liberal I don’t fit any “party.” I’m first and foremost an American. I care about my country. My country has a broken health care system. It’s the most expensive on earth yet, according to the W.H.O., ranks 37th in quality of care. 46 million Americans have NO health care. A DISGRACE! The cost is 1/6 of our total economy. Insurance companies make obscene profits. Politicians receive huge contributions from the Insurance industry. Why? To protect corporate profits! Top insurance execs make $10 to $22 million per year. If I was making a million a month I would fight change, too.

Insurance companies are spending $1.4 million per day (more than Obama and McCain’s campaigns combined) to spread death panel and rationing lies. It’s a slick marketing effort to stop reform. Propaganda!

My Insurance cost for myself and daughter is $500 a month with a $5,000 deductible and a 20 percent co-pay. In other words, it’s expensive and useless for anything other than catastrophe. I would welcome the kind of coverage friends get from VA. Or the coverage people on Medicare get. A public option is competition. It would reduce cost, eliminate waste, expand coverage and improve the U.S. economy.

The private sector (corporations) have had control of our health care. They have Failed! Insurance companies have done a great job of confusing the public and making people believe single payer or government option is “Socialized medicine.” It Is NOT! It’s an OPTION. A proven way for the public to pool risk and reduce cost for the benefit of the consumer.

Contact your representative and demand they vote for reform with a public OPTION. Stop the corporate bandits who gouge American citizens.
