BRECKENRIDGE – Deep in the heart of this bustling resort town, there’s a secret valley, home to deer, elk, lynx, moose, foxes, coyotes and even a few rare endangered boreal toads seeking safe haven in a stunning network of beaver ponds and wetlands.

Cucumber Gulch is the prized centerpiece of the town’s progressive open space acquisition and protection program, geared toward conservation of natural resources. After spending several million dollars to buy the most sensitive parts of the gulch, Breckenridge is now looking to boost its stewardship of the area with the help of volunteer naturalists who will lead tours all around the town. Volunteers are also needed for logistical support, including office help and materials development.A training session for volunteers is scheduled from 1-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. The training will focus on interpretive techniques, Colorado flora and fauna, and hands-on activities. Food will be provided and benefits include ongoing free training, a fun, friendly work environment and Breckenridge Recreation Center opportunities.

“This is a chance for residents to be involved in stewardship of Cucumber Gulch and all our natural resources in a very hands-on way,” said Carin Faust, the town’s nature series supervisor. Faust said the town had to turn away some potential tour guests last year, showing how the demand for this kind of activity is growing. In response, Breckenridge has beefed up its offerings, with the full schedule of guided nature tours to be released any day.
