Volunteers needed for trail work in county

Daily Staff Report

SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County’s Open Space and Trails Department is seeking individuals and groups interested in volunteering to maintain and monitor paved bike paths, natural surface trails, and open space properties in Summit County.

These volunteers will be part of the County’s Adopt-a-Trail/Open Space Program. For the past five years this volunteer program has focused solely on the county’s paved bike path system.

This year it is being expanded to include open space areas and natural surface trails owned and managed by Summit County Government.

Volunteers will be assigned to specific trail sections or open space properties for the entire season and are required to visit their designated areas a minimum of twice per month from May to October.

Responsibilities include light maintenance, natural resource monitoring, and litter pick-up.

In exchange for this commitment, the County will provide training, tools, a kick-off party, an Open Space and Trails volunteer ball cap, and volunteer recognition signs.

“This is a great way to give something back to the community,” said Todd Robertson, County Open Space and Trails Director. “We have a tremendous open space, trail, and bike path system in Summit County, but volunteers are needed to compliment staff’s management work so that these open space properties and trails receive the care and attention they deserve.”

The County’s Adopt-a-Trail/Open Space program will kick off the 2002 season with a volunteer barbeque and orientation on May 21.

For more information on the program and to sign up, contact the Open Space and Trails Department (970) 668-4060 by May 16.
