Volunteers needed to replant Summit County campgrounds

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

Several of Colorado’s High Country campgrounds that have been devastated by mountain pine beetle will see new life following volunteer efforts to plant hundreds of trees this summer. As part of Summit County’s Legacy Forest campaign, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, in partnership with Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, will host an upcoming volunteer effort on June 12-13.

Millions of acres of Colorado’s forests have been affected by pine beetles. Campgrounds and other public areas have been closed due to the danger of dead trees falling or because removal of the dead trees has left the areas barren.

The volunteer efforts will harvest saplings from surrounding forests and replant them in closed U.S. Forest Service campgrounds. Replanting the trees will provide more shelter and privacy in the campsites, and will also help prevent future forest health problems.

Approximately 75 volunteers are needed on each date. No experience is necessary. These are family-friendly projects and youth ages 8 and up may participate with adult supervision. Many of the volunteers already registered are young people interested in helping restore Colorado’s forest health.

To volunteer, register via the project calendar on Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado’s website at http://www.voc.org or call (303) 715-1010.
