Voters decide fate of Warrior’s Mark annexation today

BRECKENRIDGE – Warrior’s Mark property owners and residents vote today on whether to annex the neighborhood into the town of Breckenridge.

Voting takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the residence of Carol and Sigurd Rockne, 547 Broken Lance Drive.

The neighborhood rejected annexation in 1996, when residents of Lower Warrior’s Mark asked to be included within town boundaries. Time share owners were blamed by annexation proponents for the demise of the initiative, which failed by 14 votes.

This time, proponents excluded the Woods Manor condominiums from the proposed map, saying the complex isn’t technically in the Warrior’s Mark subdivision.

Although neighbors have tried to remain civil in the past few months, debate about the annexation has been heated.

If voters approve the ballot issue, residents who own businesses would be required to obtain town business licenses, to pay a 1 percent fee upon the sale of property and to pay accommodations and property taxes.

Opponents say they don’t want to pay more taxes. They also say they are satisfied with the services provided by the county.

Proponents say the additional taxes would be a small price to pay for the right to vote on town issues and to participate on town boards, on committees and in government. They also look forward to the savings they’d see at the golf course, Gold Run Nordic Center, ice rinks and recreation center. Currently, Warrior’s Mark residents, like all other out-of-town residents, pay slightly more to use town facilities.
