Waldes: Motorists must be aware of cyclists

Amy Waldes, Dillon

RE: ‘Ignorant’ cyclists disgust motorist, Standford Smith, Aug. 6

I am an avid cyclist in Summit County, both on the roads and trails. I was greatly displeased in reading your letter today, feeling that you had left out one very important option: You could (and should) have slowed down until it was safe to pass the cyclists. Instead, you only listed risking a head-on collision or running over the cyclists as viable options.

I agree with you that perhaps the location was not the best place to be riding two abreast. That said, those cyclists have a right to be on the road, and there is a new law providing cyclists (and motorists) greater protection on the roads.

The new law requires motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot-wide berth to pass and allows drivers to pass – even on a double-yellow-line area of the road. HOWEVER, the law states that motorists only have this right when it is safe to do so. So please, please, slow down and wait for an appropriate, safe time to pass.

As for the riders, if in fact they were riding two abreast, the new law states that riders can ride in such a style, but only if there is no traffic behind them. So to all the riders out there, please stay safe by following the rules of the road. We riders are safer because of this new law, but there will always be a handful of motorists out there who are ignorant, too.
