Warrior’s Mark annexation election victory owes its success to many

Bryan Whitcomb, Warrior's Mark, Breckenridge

The recent election for Warrior’s Mark to be annexed into the town of Breckenridge owes its success to many.

Both the town council and county commissioners approved calling an election and both staffs provided information and support to all sides.

The Rocknes – Carol and Sigurd – permitted the use of their house for the walk-in polling place; the Palmers – Alison and Matthew – offered their home for an election rally; and neutral folks gave up an entire day for low pay as election judges.

Then there were endorsements submitted to the Summit Daily News and Biff America on his RSN panel show. Many voters wrote letters to the editor, and committees on both sides provided information supporting their positions to homeowners and resident voters.

Summit Daily reporter Jane Stebbins provided balanced, factual articles. Signs were staked in yards and phone calls made. This all made for a passionate turnout that yielded more than 370 ballots.

This year’s contest took more than a year – from petitions to election day. It is over, and Breckenridge is a bit larger, and we are a bit better off now.

Thanks to all who participated – particularly the voters who took the time to understand the issues and vote, the homeowners association board, and finally, the annexation committee members (Cindy Gray, Mark Wimberly and Carol Rockne) who needed to try again after a similar election failed six years ago for lower Warrior’s Mark.

The homeowners association will work with homeowners and the town leaders and staff to make this union work as well as it can.
