Water for people, not for grass

Mila Valenta

I see around me that people are not taking this drought seriously. At this point, we have no idea what this winter will bring, but chances are good that this drought will continue. (Twenty- to 100-year drought cycles are common.) Are we prepared for this? Are all the green lawns worth having no drinking water next summer?

At some point, we must value our environment and the creatures that populate it more than money, because a barren earth will not support humans, either.

We are exacerbating the problem. There would be enough water (for now, anyway) if we all use it conservatively. Water restrictions should be mandatory effective immediately, with stiff fines presented to those who would squander our precious water on Kentucky Bluegrass (which has no business here anyway – heard of xeriscaping?). Keystone and Copper Mountain will apparently keep using water “without any restrictions.” This is selfish and short-sighted. Not only does a golf course waste precious water in the name of recreation, but the chemicals used to keep the course pest- and weed-free pollute the water each time it rains or is watered. Sadly, most golf courses are built on a waterway.

Let’s start behaving like the intelligent humans we are and consider the long-term effects of our actions. There are important uses for water – green lawns and golf courses are not among them.
