SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County Water Rescue received notice recently that the group will receive nearly $4,400 from the Laci and Conner Search and Rescue Fund. The funds will be used to purchase two Viking Pro 1000 cold-water diving suits to replace two aging suits.

The suits are critical for the cold-water environment of high-altitude diving operations, and will be used for activities like accident victim rescue and recovery, vehicle and boat recovery and salvage, ice diving, ice rescues and underwater crime scene investigation.

“The timing of this donation couldn’t be more perfect,” said special operations Sgt. Cale Osborn. “Our current suits are within two months of expiration.” The suits have a 10-year shelf life, or 1,000 dives, before they become unusable.

The Summit County Water Rescue Team is one of the only high-altitude water rescue teams in the world. The all-volunteer group trains and performs missions between 7,000 and 11,140 feet above sea level.

The Laci and Conner Search and Rescue Fund was founded in December 2005 by Sharon Rocha in memory of her daughter, Laci Rocha Peterson, and her grandson, Conner Peterson. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to law-enforcement agencies and nonprofit organizations involved in water-based search and rescue.
