We need to keep good patrollers

Regarding the Breckenridge Ski Patrol not receiving their raise and/or new contracts, as well as getting a decrease in equipment allowance, one begins to wonder how much more selfish Vail Resorts and upper management can and will become as they continue to increase their own salaries.

As a recent recipient of Beaver Creek’s Ski Patrol care, I have reinforced my own belief on how important and indeed necessary their professionalism, quick response and emergency decisions and response are on our slopes – in every resort.

It has long been known that the Breckenridge Ski Resort has always been Vail Resort’s “cash cow”. In response to this, the Breckenridge Ski Patrol (as well as many of its non-management employees) is literally slapped in the face. Not only has the ski patrol not received wage increases, but neither have ski instructors, lift operators, office workers, etc. from all of the Vail Resorts. These are the same individuals who keep the resorts operating and are literally the backbone of the organization. This is the thanks they get.

To top it off, on Thursday evenings at Beaver Creek and on another evenings (either Friday or Saturday) at Vail, regardless of how small or large the population in these towns are at the time, fireworks are shot off. One wonders how VR can afford the huge cost of these weekly extravaganzas when they “say”they can’t afford to pay a decent wage to the lifeblood of their organization, employees who work to make VR’s business so successful.
