Wealth does not mean more morality

What a sad commentary on our political times when we read a letter glorifying a millionaire candidate’s efforts to buy his way into Congress, suggesting such profligate use of personal wealth will bring new integrity to government (“Jared Polis Can’t Be Bought,” Daily Mail, July 5).

My answer to Tom Parsons is that what voters look for is more than the values a candidate may promote in his own self-paid high-priced advertising ” they look at what a candidate has accomplished in enacting those values into law during long years of public service.

Does a candidate with huge personal wealth automatically have more moral fiber than one without? I suggest the question we ask outselves should really be ” who has the experience in legislating, who has fought battles for years inside and outside the Colorado state legislature to protect and further constituents’ values and rights?

Clearly, that candidate is Joan Fitzgerald, recently leader of the Colorado State Senate ” and incidentally our “Summit County Senator” in Denver. Though in Tom Parsons’ terms, Joan has the disadvantage of having to raise campaign money the old-fashioned way, donor by donor, her success in that endeavor proves the overrwhelming advantage she has from past performance in public life. Talk about integrity.

Voters now are proverbially “putting money where their mouth is” behind Joan Fitzgerald because they are convinced her record of achievement has earned her the opportunity to represent our interests on the larger stage of the U.S. Congress.

Whatever appealing qualities Jared Polis has ” and I do not doubt they are several ” none of them includes going outside personal wealth for voter/donor support generated by past legislative achievement.
