Weed of the week: Dame’s Rocket

Daily News staff report
Weed of the week

Control: Dame’s rocket can be controlled by pulling or cutting the flower heads after they bloom, but prior to seed dispersal. Locating and removing the plants immediately before seed set is the best way to prevent the spread. Since the root system is shallow on this species, hand pulling is easy. Dame’s rocket is often confused with the native Fireweed. At first glance they may look similar, Fireweed is a darker reddish / purple and blooms from the bottom-up. Once it is finished blooming at the top, it is said that summer is over. Dame’s rocket on the other hand is taller, blooms at the top, is a pinkish / red, and is very fragrant.
