Welcome back to the chamber, Marc

Eric TurnerSummit Chamber of Commerce president

In his Jan. 26 article, Marc Carlisle was a bit “off the mark” on a few key points.”The advent of the internet has made the marketing opportunities offered by (the Summit Chamber) less attractive…”A Google search for “Summit County” results in http://www.summitchamber.org as the first nongovernmental website listed. This site, with over one million hits per year, opens the world up for our 600-plus member businesses.”… not worth thousands of dollars in membership dues.”The average membership falls in the $300 to $400 range, and concrete member benefits pay back in the thousands of dollars.”… why there are no advocates … who are taking steps to get the (healthcare) cost under control.”The advocate for the businesses of Summit County regarding healthcare costs is the Summit Chamber in partnership with local elected officials, the other town chambers in the area, and interested businesses. For the past year this partnership has been working on the creation of a wellness-based health plan that would create a “group” consisting only of its members here in the High Country. Healthy lifestyle choices may be rewarded by lower premiums and deductibles. This exciting plan will be unique to this area, as well as a model for other communities around the country. As with anything that is creative and goes against the norm, this process has taken months of time and untiring effort on the part of the players involved. The resulting plan will hopefully be unveiled in its entirety and up for sale this year. Marc (and anyone else interested) has always been welcome at any of our open forum meetings on the subject, and had he attended he would be as excited as we are about this wonderful project.I was happy to read that Marc did say “For me, I’m prepared to join organizations that are mad about the cost of health insurance …”That’s great, Marc. Welcome back to the Summit Chamber of Commerce; you can call Liz Duxbury, membership director, at (970) 668-2051 to get reinstated as a member and join us in these exciting initiatives.
