Well enforcement continues in Summit

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT
Summit County, CO Colorado

SUMMIT COUNTY ” Inspectors with the State Engineer’s Office once again will take steps to crack down on well users who are violating their permits.

Under most permits, state water rules limit well water to indoor use. Irrigation of landscaping and using well water for hot tubs is forbidden, unless residents use commercially available water to augment consumption.

Later this month, inspectors will revisit wells that were found to be in violation last year. Wells that are re-inspected and still found to be out of compliance will be subject to further enforcement action, such as curtailment of actual water use from the well.

Additionally, approximately 500 additional wells in subdivisions located in the Upper Blue, Ten Mile, Snake River and Lower Blue basins will be inspected for compliance during September 2008.

The unauthorized use of ground water reduces the amount of water in streams and reduces the supply available to those who hold water rights.
