Westword lauds BBQ Challenge

FRISCO – Frisco’s annual Barbecue Challenge is the best mountain festival in Colorado.

Westword, the Denver weekly known especially for its arts and entertainment coverage, selected the annual barbecue competition as Best Annual Festival in the Colorado mountains in its annual Best of Denver 2003 issue.

The official barbecue cook-off celebrates its 10th year August 15-16. It is held each August on Frisco’s Main Street and draws more than 75 teams of barbecue competitors from across the country and 15,000 hungry visitors.

“This annual celebration of hickory-smoked meats and serious sauce (sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society) is the high country’s best family-style blowout,” according to Westword. “Visitors sample ‘cue from more than seventy of the nation’s best grill and smoker masters, making the array of meat and sauce choices finger-lickin’ heaven on earth. Sides of down-home, kid-friendly entertainment, a pancake breakfast, and Frisco’s homespun setting (and dreamy August weather) add even more sustenance to the event. Need a reason to head to the hills? This is it.”

Westword’s Best of Denver 2003 is the paper’s 20th annual “compendium of everything from the Best Burger to the Best Monument to a Cheeseburger.” The annual issue lists hundreds of top choices selected by Westword as reasons why Denver (and Colorado) is the place “we choose to live in, the place we love.” Categories include: People and Places; Goods and Services; Arts and Entertainment; and Food and Drink. The Colorado Barbecue Challenge was selected in the Arts and Entertainment section under Best Annual Festival – Mountains.
