What a terrific group of kids

David W. Robbins, association president, Denver

Our community should know what our Summit High School football team is made of. We are impressed.

Ruby Ranch has lots of old forests – the very areas so conducive to raging fires. Our mission at the beginning of this drought season was to remove the fuels we could. Sawing dead and downed trees was straightforward. But how were we going to remove the heavy logs from our forests, especially given our hills, and especially given the sheer volume of wood?

Our high school football team came to our rescue. A dozen or so players (plus coaches) regularly came to the ranch this summer to remove our dangerous fuels. This is a very difficult job. The wood is heavy. Our hills are steep. The sun is hot. Three hours a day is exhausting, even for young men who are fit.

The football team was paid well for the valuable services rendered. But here is the real information: the kids worked not for themselves, but for the team. All money was paid to their team. Indeed, many of the hot, sweaty, exhausted kids often left our site to do their regular summer jobs.

We on Ruby Ranch are grateful for what the Summit football team did for us. But the entire community should be proud of the young men who comprise the current team.

Go Tigers! And please give the football team your support. The players have demonstrated by their action that they deserve the community’s full support.
