What does the American Flag stand for …

What does the American Flag stand for – opportunity, the quick buck, the rugged individual, apathy of the masses, immediate gratification, fast food, farmers feeding the world, technological and military might, excess and donation, drugs, sex and

rock “n’ roll, wide expanses of open land, caverns and mountain peaks, capitalism, credit, bravery and arrogance, ignorance, intellect, people with wide, open smiles?

No wonder the American flag can inspire such controversy. It is a symbol that may encompass all that and much more.

I set out with my father and friends to place the flag on the summit of Peak 1 on the morning of Sept. 11. For me, it was meant to be a symbol of solidarity and healing. Nobody was there with a political agenda. We showed up with drive and compassion, as politically diverse as any group of individuals could be. Why? Because two years ago, innocent world citizens had an act of violence perpetuated against them and it resonated in hearts around the world.

I share in the shock and dismay that so many have expressed after learning the flag was torched. I don’t understand how a person can express anti-war sentiments through an act of aggression against a peaceful movement.
