What they really mean

John McArthur - Silverthorne

If I say “Save the pristine fields,” what I really mean is “I live in Willowbrook or Eagles Nest and I don`t want my property values to go down.”

If I say “The town needs to develop a better business plan,” what I mean is “My spouse works for Safeway’s competitor and some of her co-workers may lose their jobs.”

If I say “If the town would honor its agreement and pay back the $2 million it used to pay for the land that is now the River Center,” what I really mean is “Gee, I sure wish I could vote, but since I don’t live within the town limits. I can’t.”

If you say “There are other sites available for a grocery store” I say “Here’s what I really mean, if I sold real estate or lived in those subdivisions, I probably wouldn’t want that field developed either.”

But the bottom line is our town has some pretty good people running the business end of things.

Our town finance director was just awarded Finance Officer of the Year for the state. So when they say we need Safeway I believe them.

If you are against “big box retail,” how about supporting implementation of town property taxes? The revenues have to come from somewhere.

As for the town “filling the vacancies within the business district,” how is the town supposed to do that? The town doesn’t own those properties.

Would you suggest the town enforce eminent domain and seize private property?

And yes, my wife works for the town.
