Whistler locals hot on subject of locals’ cards

ALLEN BESTspecial to the daily

WHISTLER, B.C. – Whistler is debating the virtues of two-tiered price systems, the regular rate and then the locals’ discounts.”Have you ever had a sit-down with an actual ‘local’ and asked how hard it is to live in this place?” asked Heidi Johnson, presumably one such local, in a letter published in Pique.Hair salon owner Sharon Noesgaard, in another letter, argues against locals’ cards and other overt discounts based simply on residency. Two-tiered pricing, she said, offends visitors in places where the very economy is predicated upon visitors. Conversely, she reports having had “locals” belligerently demanding a discount without any regard or respect of the tourist who may be next in line. Locals wanting discounts, she says, should shop the annual clearance or discount sales. Another idea: loyalty cards. It achieves the same end, but without offending others.
