Who is Mobb Deep?

AUSTIN DIAZ

BRECKENRIDGE – Mobb Deep hit the hardcore rap scene in the mid-’90s. Members Prodigy and Havoc quickly won a cult following after releasing their second album “The Infamous.”The duo’s brutal, unforgiving depiction of life in Queensbridge, a rough housing project of New York City, sets them apart from other acts of the same genre. “There’s a war goin’ on outside, no man is safe from/ You could run, but you can’t hide forever/ from these, streets, that we done took/ You walkin’ witcha head down scared to look,” raps Prodigy in the song “Survival of the Fittest.”Each of their albums meets both critical acclaim and critical dismissal.”Critics say that their music is all about guns, drugs and sex – and these critics may be right,” writes the AudioRevolution.com about Deep’s album “Murder Muzik.” “However, Mobb Deep does what they do so well … we simply don’t care.”Their lyrical content usually draws the dividing line, though few dismiss their ability or talent.Briefly caught up in the feud between Nas and Jay-Z, the group, instead of retaliating, released the crossover hit “Hey Luv (Anything),” which dabbled in rap-pop.In the past, Havoc produced most of the duo’s beats, but recently collaboration has increased between Mobb Deep and the Alchemist, who will appear with Deep at Sherpa’s. Mobb Deep has a new album slated for release in August. The new album will feature cuts with Nelly and quite possibly Kanye West, hip-hop’s golden boy. “Up until this point they’ve had huge, underground-circuit success,” said Josh Frager, co-owner of Sherpa and Yeti’s. “But with this next release, they could really hit it big.”- Austin Diaz
