Why are the West Africans targeted by the U.S.?

Karn Stiegelmeier

I am absolutely appalled, horrified and sickened by the immigration officials’ treatment of West Africans in our community.

They are fascinating, hard working, gentle people of great spirit, despite the unspeakable trauma they have suffered before seeking asylum in this country.

It makes no sense that these peaceful, kind asylees from a terrible war in Mauritania are treated in this horrific manner.

The West Africans all came here with proper documentation desperately seeking refuge from abusive governments. We have many illegal immigrants/workers in our community with no documentation. Why are the West Africans being targeted? Are we returning to the era of Japanese internment camps?

This raid is part of a “homeland security” pilot program in Denver and Atlanta using scarce law-enforcement resources and detention space to lock up people with no criminal record or violent history.

I am disgusted that our tax dollars for “homeland security” are being used in such an abusive, inhumane and ineffective way. I am shocked to see this type of tyranny and lack of human decency in our little community.

Please show your goodwill to these wonderful people in our community after such an absurd abuse of power.
