Why there is a day-use fee

Garland W. Young, area manager, Thousand Trails, Dillon/Holy Cross District

In reference to Mr. Post letter voicing his opinion on the day-use fee of $6 at Giberson picnic/day-use area:

As the Dillon/Holy Cross Area manager for Thousand Trails Inc., I would like the community to know why we asked the U.S. Forest Service for and got its approval of a usage fee at Giberson picnic/day-use area.

First, I will list the cost of operating the above-mentioned day-use area:

1. Trash dumpster set-up fee … $150

2. Trash pickup fee … $1,900 for a season

3. Removing dumpster at season end … $50

4. Paying two people to clean up restroom for the season … $1,500

5. Cleaning supplies and toilet paper for the season … $400

6. Gas for truck for season … $100

7. Vaults pumped out twice a season … $1,000

When you total these expenses, you come up with a $4,000 cost for the five-month operating season.

Thousand Trails Inc. is not looking to make a profit for operating the day-use areas in the White River National Forest, only to break even.

We also recognize that if you live in the area and regularly use the day-use areas, the $6 a day user fee could create quite an expense, which we do not want.

So we are selling a season pass or permit for $25 that will allow the permit holder to use any day-use area operated by Thousand Trails in the White River National Forest. Since most families today are a two-car family, the permit will be good for two cars.

Thousand Trails wants the community to think of our company as a member in good standing.

We will have a host at Giberson day-use area on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. and 2-4 p.m. to sell the season day-use permits, and on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. to do the same. Otherwise, you can buy the permits at Heaton Bay or Peak One campgrounds.
