FINAL UPDATE: Helicopter’s water-bucket drops help to suppress wildfire near Silverthorne as crews say containment is near
7:30 p.m.: Firefighters are leaving the Boulder Creek wildfire north of Silverthorne for the evening after a helicopter’s water-bucket drops helped suppress the flames Friday evening.
Summit Fire & EMS said containment is expected by nightfall.
Crews created a line of dirt around the perimeter of the blaze that is expected to hold until morning, when crews plan to work on extinguishing hotspots.
The cause is still unknown, but the U.S. Forest Service will be investigating and providing updates Saturday.
“There were about 20 firefighters on the ground this afternoon, and they kept the fire to about two-tenths of an acre, demonstrating our commitment to responding quickly and aggressively to keep threatening wildfires small,” Summit Fire & EMS wrote in a statement Friday.
Red, White and Blue Fire Protection District, Summit County Sheriff’s Office, High Country Training Center and the U.S. Forest Service helped on scene.
“Also, thanks to residents in Acorn Creek and other areas across the Blue River valley who first observed the smoke and called 9-1-1 quickly to report it,” the statement continued. “Way to be on your toes, everyone!”
Vail Fire Department helped cover Summit County’s fire districts as crews battled the fire Friday.
Summit Fire & EMS said past fuel reduction work in the area played a role in keeping the community safe. The agency also noted that the Pebble Creek neighborhood was the first neighborhood in the community to receive a Firewise designation, which the agency said helped make crews confident that the remote area could be defended.
