Winter storm warning for Colorado’s central mountains

Sean Naylor | Vail Daily

A winter storm warning has been issued for western Colorado, including the northern and central mountains, from Tuesday to Thursday.

The system is expected to hit the high country late Tuesday night, bringing some of the most generous offerings to Summit, Vail and surrounding area, where snow accumulation could reach up to ten inches.

Winds gusting as high as 50 mph are also mentioned in the warning.

Southwestern Colorado will be hit the hardest by this storm, which will excite skiers in the San Juan mountain range. Purgatory, Silverton and Wolf Creek will all be open this weekend; Keystone Resort, as well as Telluride and Kendall Mountain, are closed for the season.

Map shows probability by-the-inch

According to a new, experimental map by the Nation Weather Service that shows snowfall probability, there is a 56% chance that the snow accumulation in the central mountains will be higher than 6 inches.

More snow to come

April may have been off to a dry start, but that is not how it is expected to finish.

According to Joel Gratz of OpenSnow.com, the forecast through May 22nd shows lots of potential for snow. There are strong signals from multiple models that predict Colorado having colder-than-average temperatures and higher-than-average precipitation for that time period.

“Tuesday will be the last warm day for a while,” Gratz reported.
