Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the timeline that the winter weather advisory is in effect.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Summit County starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, and lasting until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2. According to the advisory, the area could get anywhere from 5-12 inches of snow, and winds could reach 60 miles per hour above timberline. Weather impacts could include slick roads and poor visibility over higher-altitude passes.

OpenSnow meteorologist Joel Gratz said in a Jan. 1 blog post that conditions could bring the area’s slopes some powder by Thursday morning. He said Thursday morning should bring its own 4-8 inches of powder as well, and there’s a slight chance it could bring even more than that.

“The latest snow forecast from a blend of models looks promising for the northern mountains with a lot of areas in the 6-10+ inch range,” he said. “However, I think that this is a bit too optimistic for some spots.”
