BRECKENRIDGE ” In the Backstage Theatre’s latest production “Guys on Ice,” life is simple.

In Wisconsin, specifically in an ice shanty in Sturgeon Bay, the beer is Leinenkugel, the talk is ice fishing jokes and the Packers reign supreme.

Marvin and Lloyd, played by Tim Moore and Rick Seeley, find their escape from the world in a shack where the weather is a perpetual 40 degrees below.

Through song and dance, the two characters reveal their love for the activity, and all it includes.

Director Michael C. Grittner notes the songs ” one is an ode to the snowmobile suit, another worships the fish, “the miracle food,” while there is another where Marvin takes on the role of Elvis as the “King” of the fish.

The two guys bond over beer and talk of their relationships, all while keeping their brew away from Ernie the Moocher, played by Andrew Metz.

Metz also provides the musical accompaniment for the show, with both piano, and a little ukulele.

“The first time I read through it, I thought it was a silly, funny play,” Moore said. “But the more we’ve been through it, it’s really a sweet show about friendship between two guys.”

Women trouble are heavy on the guys’ minds.

Lloyd’s wife is staying at the in-laws over a Packers game and a wedding anniversary scheduling conflict; Marvin dreams of dating the grocery store checkout girl.

“I’m not a fish. I can think. And that’s the hell of it,” Marvin says in the play. “Sometimes I wish I were a fish.”

“The music is really fun and the characters are endearing,” Lake Dillon artistic director Chris Willard said of the play.

Metz said, “There is fun and laughter, but it’s also real and revealing to what guys often share on the ice.”
