Wizard of WOO wows

DILLON -Bernie Worrell calls himself the wizard of the WOO-niverse because he has the magic of WOO-the ability to entice whoever and whatever to get what he wants.Apparently, he was born with the WOO- at age 4, he performed 40 classical piano pieces at his first concert, and at 8, he wrote his first piano concerto. After studying at the New England Conservatory of Music and Julliard School of Music, he became the cornerstone of the supergroup Parliament-Funkadelic. Hip-hop artists from Ice Cube to the Digital Underground have built songs around his signature riffs, making him one of the most sampled musicians. He has collaborated on music projects with the Rolling Stones, the Pretenders, Soul Asylum, Jody Watley and the Talking Heads and was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.”I was born with a perfect pitch, so anything I hear, I can play,” Worrell said. “I just keep going and just do it. I don’t think about it. It just comes through me. I’m able to mix different sounds. I can go from classical to funk to rock to a Broadway play- however it comes out, whatever comes through my brain (I play).”The latest sound coursing through his brain has a big WOO factor, though defining WOO is against Worrell’s nature. He prefers to act as a conduit for the intangible force, allowing it create new musical constructs and wild experiments.”It’s intense, funky, fun- a learning experience ’cause people come and they don’t just hear one type of music,” he said. “They go on a trip. They may hear cartoon music, but it’s all funk based.”Worrell has been touring with his latest power band, Bernie Worrell & the WOO Warriors, for five years. The melodically outrageous, booty-funkifying, soul-inspiring grooves spring from six musicians: Worrell, guitarists Brett Grau and John Hicky, keyboardist Gregg Fitz, drummer Gabe Gonzalez and the youngest addition, 23-year-old bassist Brett Bass.Bernie Worrell & the WOO Warriors funkify the Lake Dillon Pub tonight beginning at 9:30 p.m.—When & Where- What: Bernie Worrell & the WOO Warriors- When: 9:30 p.m. today- Where: Lake Dillon Pub, Dillon
