Woman accused of holding grandson in kennel appears in court

COMMERCE CITY – A woman accused of locking her 13-year-old grandson in a kennel for 11 hours a day for three years while she went to work at a sheriff’s department made a brief appearance in court Tuesday.Authorities said June Candelario, 61, shut the boy in the kennel from 4 p.m. until 3 a.m. in her Adams County home while she was at her job as a detention counselor for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.Police said the kennel was smaller than 3 feet by 4 feet.The boy’s name was not released. He was placed in protective custody with Adams County human services officials.Candelario was being held on $100,000 bail on suspicion of kidnapping, child abuse, false imprisonment and reckless endangerment.She was scheduled return to court Thursday for formal filing of charges, Assistant District Attorney Mike Goodbee said.Candelario has been suspended with pay pending the police investigation, Jefferson County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Shires said.
