Woman caught using children in shoplifting

Reid Williams

BRECKENRIDGE – Police arrested a woman Thursday suspected of using two children to distract store clerks while she shoplifted.

The Bay Street Company, a Main Street retailer, alerted Breckenridge police officers to a possible shoplifter around 1:50 p.m. Thursday. Officers responding to the scene spotted a woman matching the suspect’s description entering a different store.

The woman, Ann M. Williams, 44, of Aurora, had empty bags from three Breckenridge stores. The officers noted that Williams had many suspected stolen items in the back of her car. The police impounded the car and obtained a search warrant.

Inside the car, officers found more than 40 suspected stolen items from four stores, with an estimated value of more than $1,000.

Witnesses told officers that Williams used her two small boys to distract clerks while she would take merchandise. The boys would allegedly run around the stores, picking up various items and holding clerks’ attention, and Williams would leave the store without making a purchase.

Officers arrested Williams and charged her with felony theft. Her two boys were released to the county’s Department of Social Services when no adult family member or friend could be found.
