Woman ejected in I-70 rollover crash

SUMMIT COUNTY – The Summit County Ambulance Service transported a 17-year-old woman to a Denver hospital after a rollover accident Wednesday morning on Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel. The accident occurred just after 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes at mile marker 209, according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Martin Plakorus.Kathryn Boland was driving over the speed limit and passing cars in the left lane when she lost control of her minivan, crossed through the right lane of traffic and collided with an embankment, Plakorus said.Boland was ejected when the vehicle rolled onto its side. She was not wearing her seatbelt, he said. After Boland was thrown from the vehicle, it continued to slide on the interstate, hitting another vehicle and causing that driver to hit the guard rail, Plakorus said. The other driver was not injured.Plakorus did not know whether Boland’s injuries were life-threatening, but said several doctors on the scene indicated she could have internal injuries. She also had significant facial lacerations, he said.Boland was taken to Summit Medical Center, before she was transferred to Denver. Plakorus said the hospital had hoped to utilize Flight For Life, but the weather was too poor.Plakorus said the speed limit is 60 miles per hour on that stretch of interstate, but he estimates Boland was driving about 75 miles per hour. Road conditions were slippery. He said Boland indicated she was in a hurry to get to Copper Mountain.
