JASON STARRsummit daily news

A 28-year-old female hiker was killed by a lightning strike Sunday afternoon in the Little French Gulch area northeast of Breckenridge. The woman, whose name was not released, was hiking with a group of about five people from out of town, according to Kim O’Brien Scott of the Red, White and Blue Fire Department. The woman was struck directly about 3 p.m.; other members of the group were knocked down and suffered minor injuries.A companion started CPR on the victim and another ran 2 miles to the nearest house to call for help, O’Brien Scott said.Red, White and Blue, Summit County Ambulance and the Summit County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene, approximately 7 miles from downtown Breckenridge.Paramedics found no pulse or respiration in the victim. A defibrillator indicated that there was no activity in the heart and no shock was given. Following evaluation and consideration of the time since the initial strike had occurred, resuscitation efforts were discontinued.”This was a very unfortunate accident,” said Red, White and Blue Capt. Mike Rutherford. “We want to stress to the public that ground-burst lightning strikes have been very prevalent in the last three weeks in Summit County, usually in the afternoon. Lightning can strike even up to 15 miles from a thunderhead, so even if there is blue sky above you and it is not raining, you still might not be safe if you can see or hear a storm in the distance.”
