Women, be strong
RE: U.S. skeleton coach placed on leave amid sex charges (SDN Jan. 1)Ah, the age old subject of sexual harassment … you know the one, the one that no one wants to talk about, and if they do, often makes people feel awkward. Well it’s about time this subject does receive more attention. Could it really be that this type of behavior still exists; that this type of barbarian still lives? Oh yes, it’s true, and it’s happening in our very own back yards. As a victim of sexual harassment and abuse, I know how hard it will be for these female athletes. You trust someone to nurture your interests, to teach you things you want to learn, to support you in making a living (as in an employer), to push you and encourage you to become an Olympic athlete (as in a coach). The two victims have a female teammate who has been quoted as saying “these people cannot make the team, so they are trying to destroy this man’s life” (although one of them is a 2002 Olympic gold medalist) and “I want him there (at the Olympics) more than anything because he’s gotten me to where I am.” Wow, at the expense of what her fellow athletes have had to endure? How selfish. So beware strong women, these type of archaic “men” do still exist, and so do the women who support them. Speak up! Tell someone – a trusted friend, lover or husband. Contact a support group such as the Advocates for Victims of Assault which is also in your backyard in Frisco. The more this subject is brought to the foreground, and not swept under the rug as something too embarrassing and taboo to discuss, the sooner this type of behavior will cease to exist. And strong women can get on with their training to become Olympic athletes, or simply make a living doing something that they love to do. And remember, “Well-behaved women seldom make history …”
