Wonka’s tech side is extraordinary

Step into the wondrous world of Willy Wonka’s magic, mystery and chocolate, with Summit High School’s fall musical, “Willy Wonka.”

First envisioned as a one-act play for younger students, “Willy Wonka” has been rewritten to accommodate two acts. It tells the classic story of five children who find a golden ticket in their candy bars, which entitles them to tour the Wonka Chocolate Factory. Charlie Bucket (played by Chamonix Adams Porter) lives in a shack with his parents and grandparents, but his life transforms when he discovers the last golden ticket.

“There is a cautionary tale woven throughout, and each character learns a valuable life lesson,” said Cathie Hill, choir teacher.

The performance combines singing, dancing and live music with an extraordinary set and technical side. In fact, director Kevin Abernathy gathered $80,000 worth of donations in lighting, microphones, set pieces, a hazer machine and more, for the show.

“(The effects are) something the county hasn’t really seen before,” Abernathy said.

“We put a lot of heart and soul into the technical side of things,” said Scott Porter, video production and tech instructor.

Six seniors perform in “Willy Wonka,” including Austin Miller as Wonka himself.

“I’m going to need some tall talent to replace these guys,” Hill said at Thursday’s Summit High School assembly, where students caught a glimpse of the wild Wonka world.
