Year-round school bad for youth camp experiences

Marla ColemanPresident American Camp Association, Keystone

I read with dismay the article on Feb. 2 about the Summit School District exploring the possibility of a year-round calendar. As a part-time resident of and advocate for the county, I feel compelled to offer a perspective as president of the American Camp Association.Camp teaches kids to be productive, connected and self-reliant – skills that are not always fostered in school, neighborhoods or even families. There are other important out of school learning opportunities that would be precluded from contributing to a child’s successful development if school were year-round.Particularly in this community, where occasions to connect with the outdoor world abound, it would be an educational shame to limit our children’s exposure to opportunities to become connected and learn to navigate on their own – the hallmarks of youth development, which need other avenues to grow in addition to school.Parents who send their children to camp, for example, will be the first to tell you that their kids come home with outstanding new skills, such as perseverance, courage and good citizenship. Yes, there are three R’s in school, but camp has its own set: resourcefulness, resilience and responsibility.I do hope the board and administrators of the Summit School District will reconsider and celebrate the learning environment that Summit County naturally provides.
