Yes, Dr. Bennett has been to Africa

Dr. Jim Bennett, Keystone Symposia

Letter-writer Brook Wehde, who commented on my letter about natural versus genetically modified foods (SDN, Aug. 29), wondered if I or the other gentleman writing in support of my views had ever been to Africa.

I spent two years there in the Peace Corps, 15 years directing medical research in the Sudan under a National Institutes of Health contract and 12 years working in Egypt under support of the United States Agency for International Aid.

By the way, I agree with Brook’s general thesis that our eating habits are awful and responsible – according to the great epidemiologist at Harvard, Walter Willet – for about 70-80 percent of all morbidity associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease plus obesity.
