Yes, Rumsfeld and Bush should go

I totally agree with Mary Augustyn (SDN, May 15) that Donald Rumsfeld should resign as secretary of defense. As he said when he testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee, “the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison happened on my watch, and I take full responsibility for them.”

Now, it becomes clear that soon after 9-11, it was he, Donald Rumsfeld, who approved of a highly secret program, a “special access program” or SAP, to interrogate high value targets in the War on Terror in any way that would force them to cooperate.

Rumsfeld and his designated undersecretary of defense, Stephen Cambone, “endorsed a policy of “getting tough” with prisoners in Iraq suspected of being insurgents who were attacking U.S. convoys and other vulnerable targets.

Getting tough evidently included sleep deprivation, exposure to extremes of cold and heat and placing prisoners in “stress positions” for agonizing lengths of time.

Rumsfeld and Cambone added sexual humiliation to these other methods of questioning prisoners. (The latter information is excerpted from the article “The Gray Zone” in The New Yorker.)

As for President Bush, I believe we need “regime change” in the U.S. Certainly, Bush lied to us about the reasons for this war, and he is responsible for the deaths of uncounted tens of thousands of Iraqis and at least 700 U.S. troops (the number grows every day) to say nothing of those wounded and maimed for life.
