Burning of flag cannot be end to 9-11 tribute

This burning of an American flag hurts, really hurts. A protester or group of protesters climbed Peak 1 and burned the new American flag placed in memorial to those who died Sept. 11 in the terrorist attacks.

As protests go, this is a senseless one and will engender no sympathy with most people.

The American flag was placed by a dedicated Summit Countian, Kurt Kizer, and his band of hikers. This is the second year of the memorial hike because high winds shredded the first flag placed in 2002. The same was expected this year. Basically, the hike is becoming an annual solemn event.

This weekend, we were looking up Peak 1 with the naked eye for the flag and couldn’t see it. We thought the lighting was wrong. It turns out, everything was wrong.

This hurts because the spirit of the hikers in placing the flag strikes all the right patriotic tones for Summit Countians. This has hardly been a mindless, jingoistic display.

The flag placed by hikers is meant to honor the dead and signify an indomitable spirit felt by individuals and our country, as a whole. The site of the flag represents the beauty of the country and the arduous task of placing it equates to how hard many will work to protect and preserve what is right with America.

We urge the community to rally around placing another flag, even if it, too, might suffer vandalism. We can’t give up. Not now.
