Cheers and Jeers

Cheers: To the town of Breckenridge Recreation Department for going the extra mile this summer to ensure such a consistently good experience for all the runners in its trail running series. Nike got a lot of the credit for its title sponsor role, but the rec employees deserve an equally firm pat on the back for their behind-the-scenes work.Cheers: To the doctors of High County Health Care, who donated $10,000 to Summit Schools to help fund extended-day kindergarten for low-income families.Cheers: to Summit County voters who helped get the renewable energy initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot.Jeers: To the folks at the Main Street Station who were watering the area south of the Hyatt Thursday morning. Yes, they were watering at the proper time of day, about 7:30 a.m. before the sun comes up. But they were irrigating not native flowers or new trees, but about a half-acre of false chamomile and sweet clover – NOXIOUS WEEDS! What they should do is spend about two hours pulling all those up before they go to seed and fall into Illinois Creek and make their way down the Blue. Just to prove we’re not all sour pusses, here’s a cheer to Main Street Station for the Sunday farmer’s markets.
