CHEERS: To the Breckenridge town government for putting affordable housing and daycare at the top of the priority list for 2006. After similar bold promises were made during the Kinderhut situation and the April election, it’s nice to see government putting money where its mouth is.JEERS: To the recent series of pollutive spills in the county, which have stained a few of our main waterways. Car polish in the North Fork, mine gook in the Blue River, sewage in Dillon Reservoir … and all in the last three weeks. Ugh.JEERS: To the town of Dillon for dropping its water restrictions so early. Although voluntary restrictions are recommended, with water-use habits, it takes a heavier hand to set the best example. We are not out of the woods – and never will be – as long as we keep pretending that our water supply is neverending. The 2002 drought was not that long ago, and snowpack averages are average, at best, across the state.CHEERS: To voters. Between Dillon’s town council election, determined by one vote, and the recent Red, White and Blue tax request that was determined, again, by one vote, it proves the point: Your vote could be the difference. This county has proved it twice in the last month.CHEERS: To the current immigration debate in this country. No matter what you believe, it’s time to understand how we manage millions of workers willing to work hard and cheaper than most American-born citizens. To the hope that reason, and fairness, prevails …
