Cheers and Jeers

EDITORIAL

CHEERS: To the organizers and volunteers who coordinate the Summit Mountain Challenge, a great local mountain biking series. Without it, truly there would be a void in the county, as this event brings folks of all ages together in a fun, competitive environment.CHEERS: To those who rode the Summit Stage on Thursday, as part of this year’s national public transportation day. The bus is one of the cleanest, easiest and cheapest ways to get around the county, and we should know how lucky we are to have this bus system here.JEERS: To Summit County losing its “Playground” slogan. While the signs on the pass may not pull in visitors like other marketing ploys, the “playground” idea gives us a comforting, fun feeling as we drive by on the way to other, less adventurous areas – like Denver.JEERS: To the sidewalk waterers of the county. While we debate about whether we should water our lawns in the arid West, we should know one thing: The cement doesn’t need it. CHEERS: To more forest health projects. The Dillon Reservoir forest health initiative, under public consideration, would clear dead and beetle-infested lodgepole pines across several thousand acres around Keystone, Dillon and Frisco. The proposal includes 20 acres of patch cuts, the removal of older trees from about 305 acres and reduction of hazardous fuels from about 715 acres in the wildland-urban interface. We’re finally acting, and thinking, long term.
