Housing cut minus a debate

EDITORIAL

In one fell swoop absent full public comment, Frisco this week lost the opportunity to build two more affordable homes for solid middle class worker bees, just the type of citizen the town needs. The loss occurred in a “negotiation” between neighbors of the Belford Place affordable project in Frisco and the developer. Neither prospective residents, nor their advocates, had a seat at the table.Keep in mind, the block of land is owned by all of Frisco’s residents and property owners, not just by the neighbors.Developer Rob Dick originally proposed to build 12 units, 10 of them affordable, deed-restricted townhouses and two of them free market, single-family units to help pay for the complex. The land is zoned for 12 units per acre, and the parcel is one acre.Neighbors’ objections to that density generated a petition signed by 140 neighbors and, incredibly, parents from the adjacent Frisco Elementary School. They may very well have denied one of their teachers, or future teachers, a piece of the American Dream.Possibly, a fully vetted public process before the Frisco Planning Commission might have arrived at the same result. But now, we will never know.As it is, the compromise cut two units and two six-car garages for the affordable units. Land is a valuable and scarce commodity when communities try to build affordable housing. Frisco just gave away precious land without a full public process.
