If you’re here, you’re a local

Summit County is a land of people who are mostly from someplace else. Many people move to the mountains not only for the beauty and the opportunities, but to escape some of the communities, especially back East, where it was very important if you were born there or not.

So, we find it ironic and off-putting when we hear locals continually trying to justify something by saying, “I’m a 10-year local Š” or “I’m a 25-year local Š”

Usually, the preface of longevity has something to do with a political statement or a complaint.

Who cares how long anybody has been here? In our view, if you live here, you are a local. The more important criterion is what you have to offer to the community.

The only people who have a right to brag about their longevity in Summit County are the few who were actually born here or came here so long ago that they truly command respect.

In this category, you can talk about the Longs, the Culbreaths, the Knorrs, the Theobalds and a few others. Helen Foote, a Frisco pioneer who isn’t from here, either, also gets a free pass because she remembers when the town was almost dead.

The rest of us need to pipe down on the longevity clause.

Now, for those of you who slap bumper stickers on your vehicles that say “native”: If you aren’t a Ute Indian, you’re wrong.
