Letter to the Editor: GOP officials are the ones threatening our rights, not Democrats
Breckenridge
Ron Huffstutter claims that GOP officials are the only ones protecting our rights. His evidence of Democratic transgressions centered around steps taken during the serious part of the COVID-19 pandemic. Certainly there are two sides to this story! He also cites the favorite call by conservatives of “defund the police.”
Nowhere in the U.S. is this theory part of public policy. Nowhere.
Now to instances of GOP attacks on citizen’s rights that are fully documented:
- In a majority of GOP controlled states there are upwards of 40 laws passed that target various aspects of the LGTBQ community. Certainly an attack on one’s constitutionally protected rights.
- Despite not one bit of election fraud being proved, many of these same GOP states are passing measures that make it harder to vote, eliminating drop boxes, cutting voting hours and increasing ID requirements, plus other issues. These steps would affect more Democrats than Republicans.
- Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida signed a measure which is a direct attack on free speech with his “Don’t Say Gay” law, with a multitude
of unintended consequences as a result.
These radical steps have made DeSantis a heavy favorite to be the next Republican presidential candidate. Scary.
