Letter to the editor: I am not OK with Xcel’s smart meter program
Silverthorne
I have written to you before about the perceived unlimited pricing power that Xcel Energy has in our state.
I, like many Colorado residents, received a recent announcement at the beginning of the year. Xcel will begin installing “smart meters” in homes across the state.
While I understand that this is a means of more closely “monitoring” energy usage, the key word is monitor. If I “opt out” of this “no direct cost to you” install, my monthly bill will increase by $23.64 based on a call I made to customer service this week. That isn’t a choice. That’s an ultimatum! If I don’t submit to them holding an “electronic gun” to my head, they will increase my bill and eliminate the job of whoever currently does monthly meter reading. That goes down real hard with me as it is an electronic “Big Brother” intrusion and replacing someone’s job at the same time.
Your thoughts on this issue are welcome.
