Letter to the editor: I had a great time volunteering at the local food bank

My experience with volunteering with the Family & Intercultural Resource Center was great.

On my first day there, I was nervous because I had never volunteered before and didn’t know what to expect. The person in charge was nice and asked me if it was my first time volunteering there. I replied yes, and they gave instructions on what I was able to help with. What I did for volunteering was to pack the fulfilled orders and put them in the shelves in the front to be ready for pick up.

The people there were helpful. For example, when I didn’t know where an item was, they offered if I needed help looking for it. Another thing is that they were accommodating. They made me feel welcome. If I was thirsty, I could get something to drink, take breaks, or if I wanted to eat some snacks, I could get them. I did feel that the environment did make me feel included. I did not at any time feel that I was being shut off. Everyone there just had a positive attitude. If someone needed help carrying the boxes to the shelf, another fellow volunteer helped the person carry the box to the shelves.

The organization does seem valuable to me because many people aren’t able to keep up with paying the high cost of living in Summit. I am glad that there is an organization such as the Family & Intercultural Resource Center that can help those people by offering fresh grocery food to their locals who aren’t able to keep up with all the costs.

I am grateful that I was able to be a part of the organization for a couple of days, and it did make me feel good that I was able to be part of an organization that I support and agree with their cause of helping their local people.
