Letter to the editor: I support Silverthorne and its Lowe property project plans

Wendell Grogan
Silverthorne

As a Silverthorne resident, I have a few observations on the Lowe property controversy.

First, the Willow Brook area needs better access to the trail system in that part of the county. The idea that the 4th Street parking garage makes a practical “trailhead” is absurd. The proposal approved by town council makes sense not only for the town, but also the county and our out of town visitors.

Regarding specific objections raised, I live within a few hundred feet of the Angler Mountain trailhead. Our local elk, moose, deer (and occasional bear and mountain lion) populations do not seem to be particularly bothered by a trail passing through their territory. They are quite comfortable walking across the path, down through our yards (snacking on our shrubs and flowers along the way) on their way to the Blue River.

Other objections raised have included fears of rising crime and dropping home values. We have owned homes directly on hiking paths two times, including Wildernest. In both cases, not only did we not have problems with hikers, bikers, dog walkers, skiers or snowshoers when it came time to sell those homes. The proximety to the trails was positive factor, not a drawback.

All in all, I think the Town Council is making a wise decision that will benefit Silverthorne and Summit residents.
